Luzon, Visayas grids on yellow alert

MANILA, Philippines — Grid operator National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is placing Luzon and Visayas grids under yellow alert Wednesday as more than 30 power plants are offline or are operating at reduced capacity.

In an advisory, NGCP said the yellow alert will be up in both Luzon and Visayas today, April 17, from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

A yellow alert is raised when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. It does not necessarily lead to a power outage.

NGCP said 18 power plants in Luzon are on forced outage while three others are running at limited capacities.

In Visayas, 13 power facilities are on unscheduled shutdown while five others are operating at derated capacities.

According to NGCP, the available capacity in Luzon is 13,607 megawatts but demand is seen to peak at 12,874 MW while in Visayas, the available capacity is 2,713 MW as opposed to peak demand of 2,523 MW.
