Globe rings up green savings

MANILA, Philippines — Globe Telecom Inc. booked savings of P6.9 million in energy consumption following its adoption of hybrid solar power across 26 network sites in the country, in line with its decarbonization goals.

The Ayala-led company, in a statement on Wednesday, said that using an alternative energy source enabled it to save over 119,000 liters of diesel fuel and lessen electricity consumption by over 67,000 kilowatt-hours.

A hybrid solar system uses solar power, battery storage and grid power, ensuring a stable source of energy.

The pilot program conducted from 2022 to 2023 involved Globe sites in the National Capital Region, South Luzon and Mindanao. These sites include towers that usually run on diesel generator sets, with a mix of renewable energy.

“Successfully implementing hybrid solar power across multiple sites represents a big leap in our efforts to decarbonize our operations,” said Joel Agustin, head of network planning and engineering at Globe.

The telco giant’s hybrid power solution can be built within the facility or adjacent area and provides direct power to on-site equipment.

The pilot program is aligned with Globe’s commitment of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.In 2019, the telco player became a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, a voluntary initiative promoting the adoption of sustainability practices.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group chief sustainability and corporate communications officer, earlier expressed hope that the company can inspire and catalyze a broader shift toward sustainable practices across industries, “fostering an inclusive future where the country’s business community thrives in harmony with the planet.”

In line with this, Globe entered the climate technology space last year with the establishment of Gogoro Philippines to sell two-wheel electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.
