MANILA, Philippines  Razon-led Manila Water Co. Inc.’s P8.2-billion Calawis water supply system project will be ready for full operations by May, the concessionaire said on Tuesday afternoon, with more than 900,000 Antipolo City residents expected to benefit from the project.

According to Manila Water, they are finalizing testing before the facility can provide up to 80 million liters per day (MLD) of additional treated water.

The project, which is part of the company’s Wawa-Calawis water supply system bringing a total of 518 MLD of water for consumers in Antipolo and nearby areas, was physically completed in June last year and has since been running at partial capacity.

Manila Water explained that the facility would help reduce dependence on Angat Dam. The dam in Bulacan province provides more than 90 percent of the water needs of Metro Manila and Rizal province.

Manila Water gets 1,600 MLD of supply from Angat, while its west zone counterpart Maynilad Water Services Inc. gets 2,400 MLD.

The project is under Manila Water’s 2023 to 2027 water service improvement plan, for which the company had earmarked P181 billion. Manila Water’s concession area covers parts of Mandaluyong, Makati, Pasig, Pateros, San Juan, Taguig, Marikina and Rizal.
