La Union gets new road, dike

MANILA, Philippines  —Residents, particularly farmers, in La Union can expect to enjoy safer roads and improved accessibility in the province as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) completed over P50 million worth of infrastructure projects.

According to the DPWH, these projects include the P4.9-million farm-to-market road in San Fernando City, which provides better linkage for farmers to local, regional and national market centers.

The 483-meter road connects Barangay Pao Sur and Barangay Pao Norte.

The agriculture products produced in La Union include tobacco, rice, wine, sugarcane wine, sugarcane vinegar, dried fish, native rice cakes and mushrooms.

Meanwhile, DPWH also finished the P49-million Baroro River dike, which was designed to “curb flood risks during heavy rainfall and prevent soil erosion, ensuring the safety of residents and communities along the riverbank.”

The 192-linear-meter concrete dike along Baroro River is located in Barangay Sta. Rosa, San Juan.

These infrastructure projects were funded through the 2023 General Appropriation Act.

Elsewhere in Ilocandia, the DPWH has also completed the P9.8-million upgrade of the Candon-Salcedo-Del Pilar road in Candon, Ilocos Sur.

The 1.12-kilometer concrete road project involved asphalt overlay for more durability, the agency said.

The road links motorists to tourism destinations like Ban-aw Resort, Palacapac Eco Park and Tirad Pass National Park, among others. It also aids the movement of agricultural products like rice, corn and tobacco. INQ
