They used to be fierce business rivals and, in some ways, they still are. But someone with little background about their history wouldn’t be hard pressed to guess that they used to fight over billion-peso ventures given their statements of late.
In particular, we’re talking about San Miguel Corp. president and CEO Ramon Ang who celebrated the country’s Gilas Pilipinas win over China… by heaping praise on his “frenemy-turned-friend” Manuel Pangilinan.
This comes after the San Miguel conglomerate-employed coach Tim Cone took over the reins of the national basketball team following the departure of its former coach Chot Reyes in the wake of the team’s performance in the recent FIBA World Cup.
“Let me join millions of Filipino basketball fans in congratulating Gilas Pilipinas — from its coaches to the players and team management — on our country’s historic return to the Asian Games Finals after 33 years,” Ang said in a statement.
“Our sincere appreciation goes to Mr. Manny Pangilinan, chairman emeritus of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, whose vision and dedication have been instrumental in shaping the Gilas Pilipinas we cheer for today,” he added, explaining that MVP “conceived, nurtured, and invested in the program, and it is his unwavering support and guidance all these years that molded – and continues to drive – the team.”
Ang said Gilas Pilipinas has given the Philippines great honor, and San Miguel is proud to support the team. Ang also credited other private sector partners, the government and the Philippine Basketball Association “whose collaborative efforts have helped make this Asian Games journey not just memorable, but also triumphant.”
“As Gilas Pilipinas sets its sights on the gold, let us all continue to be united, and wish them all the best,” the San Miguel chief added.
After Friday night’s gold medal match, the Philippines should know whether it will have reason to celebrate Gilas Pilipinas further. Abangan!
