Private sector groups are currently collaborating with the government to revamp the latter’s national certification system as part of a cross-sector initiative to address skill gaps in the country’s labor force.

Justine Raagas, executive director at the industry-led Philippine Business for Education, last week said that they were working with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) to improve the training regulations under the government agency’s assessment and certification program.

“It is our view that industries are important in this. Industry associations can come in and provide input and to assess what skills are needed to be taught,” Raagas told reporters last week on the sidelines of a forum in Makati City organized by the business group.

This way, she said there would be certainty that the skills learned under the program were “responsive to the needs of the workplace.”

Raagas said that it may take up to 152 days to revise the training regulations under the program, but noted that they were hopeful that some improvements will be incorporated within the year.  INQ
