MANILA, Philippines — Local companies will benefit from upskilling their employees so they can adapt to new roles given the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve business operations, according to global technology company IBM.

IBM Philippines president and technology leader Aileen Judan-Jiao, in an interview with the Inquirer, said that company roles would eventually evolve due to AI and enterprises must make moves now to understand the highly advanced tool so they would not be left behind.

She said that AI was a tool that can augment human intelligence, helping companies make operational decisions and other corporate matters.

“What should we be doing today? We should be understanding it so that we know how our jobs will evolve,” she said.

“If you sit and do nothing, it might replace you. Don’t be complacent,” she added.

According to a study conducted by IBM, 77 percent of entry-level jobs will evolve due to AI by 2025.

As such, Judan-Jiao stressed that companies must put AI in their core strategies to make operations more efficient, which could result in a better customer experience.

“Businesses are still quite fearful about AI, but they also fail to realize that they run a risk of falling behind their AI-augmented competitors,” she explained.

To dispel such “fear,” the IBM official said that the AI tool being used must be trustworthy, meaning that data backing insights generated should come from a transparent source.

“When you do AI, right at the core of strategy has to be trust and transparency. That’s the responsible use of AI. Otherwise, you cannot trust AI,” she said.
