Angkas advocates financial inclusion for bikers, partners with UnionDigital
Angkas biker partners can now open a bank account and unlock endless financial opportunities, made possible through the milestone partnership between Angkas, the country’s leading homegrown motorcycle taxi company, and UnionDigital Bank, the digital bank subsidiary of Union Bank of the Philippines. The initiative aims to empower the biker community, foster financial inclusion, and provide innovative financial solutions specifically designed for bikers. Angkas CEO George Royeca hopes the partnership is the first of many partnerships with techno conglomerates in the country.
Royeca explained, “Napaka special po nito kasi itong savings account na ito, will empower our Angkas bikers to many other financial services. Hindi lang savings–pwede na rin po silang kumita dito at pwede maging parte ng tinatawag nila na credit history na napaka importante sa mga bangko upang mabigyan sila ng iba’t-ibang opportunity sa financial system katulad ng paglo-loan, pagkuha ng insurance, at marami pang iba.”
He further added that this partnership is truly the first step in his advocacy of financial inclusion which banking the unbanked will provide. “We take this first step with UnionDigital and together we aim to open doors first for our biker partners, and hopefully as we move forward with other like-minded industry partners, we can be a force of good to help our countrymen and safeguard their future.”
The partnership reflects the values of Angkas, namely championing the informal sector and improving the quality of life for riders. Traditional banking institutions often present hurdles for informal economy members, including bikers, limiting their ability to grow financially. UnionDigital Bank President and CEO Henry Aguda said the first step would be providing bikers with a CASA (Current Account Savings Account) deposit, “You won’t get a better rate than the one you’ll get from us at UnionDigital. Mahirap kasi sometimes you need access to cash. Mahirap mag onboard, ang tagal. Mag a-apply ka, hindi mo alam kung maa-approve ka pa. With our partnership with Angkas, you’re more or less sure you’ll get access to those financial instruments,” Aguda said.
Aguda further added that the partnership with Angkas is a product of their shared belief in driving meaningful change and making a positive impact on society. “At UnionDigital, we are passionate about creating solutions that can uplift the lives of Filipinos. Collaborating with Angkas allows us to leverage on our expertise in financial services to support their vision. This partnership represents our drive towards social progress to empower Filipinos to lead fulfilling lives, starting with Angkas’ biker partners.”
To celebrate this partnership, UnionDigital Bank is launching an exclusive offer for Angkas bikers with a special interest rate to help them kickstart their financial journey.
37-year old Marvin Rapada, an Angkas biker for six years, is looking forward to the partnership. Rapada said he can’t wait to open a savings account with UnionDigital to start saving and investing money, “Napaka gandang project ito ni Angkas at UnionDigital Bank. Para sa mga rider na katulad ko, ginagawa lahat ni Angkas ang paraan para hindi darating yung araw na tatanda tayong nagmo-motor. Kailangan mag save din tayo para sa future natin at sa mga anak natin.” Rapada said a number of Angkas bikers are still bend on the mindset of day-to-day survival, “Alam mo yung attitude ng isang driver na ba-byahe tapos may income, parang isang kahig, isang tuka. Ito tinutulungan tayo ni Angkas kung paano mag impok ng pera na magagamit para sa future ng family at anak natin.”
Angkas has always been committed to improving lives by providing job opportunities and understanding the unique needs and challenges of bikers. This collaboration forms part of a broader program to address these needs and promote financial inclusion.
