MANILA  -Maynilad Water Services Inc. (Maynilad) will shell out P5.7 billion for the construction of five additional water treatment plants in the next four years in a bid to add at least 97 million liters per day (MLD) of supply for its customers.

According to Maynilad, the construction of one of the plants in Valenzuela City will begin this year to help ease the impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon.

The other facilities will be built in Pasay, Muntinlupa and Parañaque cities.

“Treated used water is a sustainable source of raw water supply, so Maynilad endeavored to include this among its alternate sources so we can eventually reduce reliance on traditional sources,” Ramoncito Fernandez, Maynilad president and chief executive officer, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The new facilities will be built under Maynilad’s New Water project, which aims to treat and reuse disposed potable water.

Its first New Water treatment plant was constructed in Parañaque in 2022 and produces around 5 MLD to serve 13,000 customers in Barangays San Isidro and San Dionisio.

Once the new plants are operational, these are expected to boost water supply for nearly 400,000 customers, according to Maynilad.

Earlier this year, the company said it would roll out supply augmentation projects that were slated to produce around 163 MLD of additional water supply from alternate sources, improving supply reliability for at least 700,000 customers.

It also earmarked P178 billion for its wastewater management program that will run until 2046.

Maynilad currently serves 9.5 million customers in the west zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Valenzuela, Malabon and parts of Cavite province.
