MANILA  -Globe Telecom is rolling out the country’s first ever voice calls on a standalone 5G network, which promises clearer and more stable communications.

In a statement on Tuesday, Globe announced the successful deployment of voice over new radio, or VoNR, during a recent event at its headquarters in Taguig.

“VoNR is a pioneering voice solution built over a 5G standalone network that promises enhanced voice quality, rapid call setup, and seamless handovers,” the telco giant said.

“It elevates the standard of voice communication, providing crystal-clear audio with minimal distortion, optimized bandwidth usage, and seamless simultaneous voice and data transmission,” it added.

5G is touted as the next-generation mobile standard offering ultra fast internet speeds.

Users, however, have been relatively slow to adopt the standard since the telco made its commercial launch four years ago. Globe said last May it had about 4.3 million 5G devices last March, which was a fraction of its overall subscriber base.

Nevertheless, Gerhard Tan, director and head of technology strategy and innovation at Globe, said they remain committed to upgrading services for all users

“Globe’s successful deployment of VoNR technology is a testament to our commitment to innovation and to providing our customers with the best telecom experience possible,” he said.

“VoNR is not just about improved voice quality and faster connections— it’s about the future of integrated communication. By harnessing the power of 5G, we’re opening up a world of possibilities for both our enterprise and individual customers and redefining what’s possible with voice services,” he added.

Globe called the launch of VoNR a “breakthrough” that was led by its technical experts, solutions architect, and technology partner HPE Singapore.

“As 5G networks continue to expand globally, VoNR integration ensures that voice services keep pace with the latest network capabilities. It paves the way for significant new business opportunities, potentially creating a host of services that cater to evolving customer needs,” Globe said.

“Globe’s successful VoNR deployment is only the beginning. The company is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of technology and continuing to revolutionize communications in the Philippines,” it added.

Globe earlier said it rolled out 66 new 5G sites across 74 cities and towns in the Philippines in the first quarter of the year.

This widened its 5G outdoor coverage to over 92 percent in the National Capital Region and about 90 percent in key cities in Visayas and Mindanao.
