MANILA, Philippines — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Monday launched the commemorative coin set for the 125th anniversary of the Philippine Independence.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and BSP governor Felipe Medalla led the launch of the coin set in Malacañan Palace.
Marcos touted how the coins were made with the “best” and “most modern” technology, which signifies how far the Philippines have come since it achieved independence 125 years ago.
“We have to see it, not just as a very nice souvenir, but really a commemoration of the creation of the Republic of the Philippines,” he said in his speech.
“We are now at the forefront and we’ll use the best technology, the best techniques, everything that is good and new to our country. It also reminds us of how far we’ve come and the significance of what we have achieved in 125 years,” the President added.
The BSP issued the coin set with 100-peso, 20-peso and 5-peso denominations in commemoration of the following:
- The 1898 declaration of Philippine independence (100-peso)
- The birth of the country’s first republic at the Barasoain Church (20-peso)
- The bravery of the Filipinos who fought for the country’s sovereignty in the Philippine-American War (5-peso)
The BSP said it used the latest digital printing technology in developing the APIN coin set, which features the first colored, non-circulation, commemorative coins produced by the BSP.
The BSP will announce via its social media channels when the APIN coin set will be available for sale. The coin set will be sold at the BSP Store https://bspstore.bsp.gov.ph.
For his part, Medalla said the coins were issued as part of the agency’s effort to preserve the cultural heritage and promote pride in our shared history.
“May this serve as an inspiration for us to continue [the collective?] efforts and work toward a better, more prosperous, and more inclusive future for all Filipinos,” he said in a separate speech.
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines is leading the 125th APIN celebration from 2023 to 2026, with the theme, “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.”
