MANILA -National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has begun the second stage of its P9.93-billion North Luzon Substation Upgrading Project after energizing new power transformers in two regions.
In a statement on Thursday, the NGCP said two 100-MegaVolt-Ampere (MVA) transformers were energized in the Tuguegarao substation in Cagayan and the San Esteban substation in Ilocos Sur.
This was followed by the 100-megavolt transformer in Laoag substation, Ilocos Norte.
“The upgrading of these substations is being done to cater the load growth and provide N-1 contingency to substations in NGCP’s North Luzon Region,” the NGCP said.
Power outage
“Without the project, power interruptions may be experienced by customers in the event of failure of existing transformers and power circuit breakers,” it added.
An N-1 contingency refers to a grid’s ability to withstand a major system disturbance with minimal or no impact to the system. This helps avoid power outages.
The NGCP, a privately owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining and developing the country’s state-owned power grid, sought the Energy Regulatory Commission’s approval for the substation upgrading project in 2021.
It also proposed to construct the 230-kilovolt Lala-Naga-Mindanao-Zamboanga transmission line project that costs around P15.06 billion.
