MANILA -The Light Rail Transport Authority (LRTA) is looking to acquire the remaining land needed to complete the LRT 1 Cavite extension project, which will add eight more stations to the existing line and cut the travel time from Pasay City to Cavite from an hour and a half to just around 30 minutes.
LRTA Administrator Hernando Cabrera told reporters recently that less than 5 percent of right-of-way requirements in areas from Sucat to Bacoor have yet to be settled, putting the project closer to completion.
The 11.8-kilometer extension project, which covers major cities such as Quezon City, Caloocan, Manila, Pasay and Parañaque, starts at the Baclaran station of LRT 1. It is designed to cater to up to 800,000 passengers daily.
The first phase includes the Redemptorist Station, MIA Station, Asiaworld Station, Ninoy Aquino Station and Dr. Santos station. Cabrera said they were targeting to make this portion operational by September next year.
The second phase consists of Las Piñas Station and Zapote Station. The third and last phase is the Niog Station.
Cabrera said the entire project was expected to start operations during the current administration.
He shared that the 4th Generation trains purchased for LRT 1 could be deployed to the extension if they would be fixed.
In February, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported that 80 of the 120 light rail vehicles bought in 2017 from Mitsubishi Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A. (CAF) were unusable because of water leaks. These were delivered in 2021 in the country.
The DOTr reached out to Mitsubishi CAF to address the problem. Cabrera shared that a rectification plan had been presented to fix the water leakage issue. INQ
