PLDT to activate 11th data center next year

MANILA, Philippines  -The 11th data center of PLDT Inc., which has been investing in such infrastructure amid increasing digitalization, is expected to welcome hyperscalers and other customers by “early” next year.

PLDT president Al Panlilio said in a recent briefing that the construction of VITRO Sta. Rosa was set to be completed by the end of this year.

“Customers and hyperscalers should be able to use it starting early part of next year,” he said.

Hyperscalers, or entities that provide cloud, networking and internet services, include Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google GCP, Alibaba AliCloud, IBM and Oracle.

With a 70-percent market share, Panlilio said the telco giant was an industry leader in the data center space.

Increased capacity

Recently, PLDT announced the 12-megawatt expansion of its VITRO Makati 2 data center, bringing the facility’s capacity to 3,360 racks.

“The data centers and the towers will be useless if you don’t have international cable system and capacity. We continue to invest also on international cable systems,” Panlilio said.

PLDT is setting its sights on hitting 1,000 terabits, or 1 petabit, of international data capacity in the next five years through investments in subsea cable systems.

It tripled its international capacity to 60 terabits per second (Tbps) when it activated the US-Transpacific Jupiter cable system in July last year. The 14,000-kilometer (km) cable system links a landing station in Daet, Camarines Norte to Japan. INQ
