German economy grew by 3% in 2011

BERLIN—Germany’s Federal Statistics Office says the country’s economy grew last year by 3 percent despite the financial crisis in Europe, which has other economies such as Greece, Spain or Italy struggling with huge debts.

German news agency dapd reported the new figures from the agency on Wednesday. In 2010, Europe’s biggest economy grew by 3.7 percent after a painful contraction of 4.7 percent in 2009, which was by far its worst showing since World War II.

Germany has weathered the debt crisis relatively well, but the latest economic indicators suggest 2012 will be a tougher year, even for Europe’s biggest economy and exporter.
