Meralco’s Spectrum bags Aficionado solar rooftop deal

Spectrum, a subsidiary of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), has collaborated with perfume label Aficionado and Japanese food house Takoyatea for a new solar rooftop project to help these brands cut costs and realize more savings through a cleaner energy source.

Under the partnership, Spectrum will install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with a collective capacity of 89.82-kilowatt peak (kWp) in four sites–Takoyatea’s commissary and Aficionado’s main office in Sampaloc, Manila, and Aficionado’s manufacturing plant and warehouse in Meycauayan, Bulacan.

The project is expected to translate to some P951,000 in annual savings and will help the two brands reduce their carbon footprint by 87.34 tons equivalent to planting 4,020 trees or reducing nearly 348,000 kilometers in car travel based on Meralco’s published rates for January 2023.

The new solar project is the latest in the successful partnership of Spectrum with Aficionado president and CEO and Takoyatea owner Joel Cruz.

“ The pandemic has taught us about caring for our health and our environment hence making us more conscious of the smart use of our resources. Incorporating sustainable practices in our business operations is all part of our corporate direction,”  Cruz said.

“Apart from being empowered to achieve sustainability and financial goals, our partners are also assured of good quality and reliable service. Through our end-to-end solar solutions, Aficionado and Takoyatea are certain to get the necessary support they will need from Spectrum as they continue to move forward toward becoming sustainable business,” Spectrum president and CEO Ferdinand O. Geluz said.

In 2022, Spectrum completed the 12.74 kWp solar project for the Takoyatea commissary in Manila, which already generated P99,000 in savings and reduced the brand’s carbon emissions by about six tons from June 2022 to January 2023.

Backed by Meralco’s energy expertise and proven safety track record, Spectrum offers tailor-fit solutions for industrial, commercial, and residential customers through an indepth understanding of energy consumption behaviors and strategic partnerships with world-class technology companies.

Earlier,  Spectrum held ceremonial turnover of solar rooftop projects to The Orchard Golf and Country Club and Biostar NutriProducts Inc.

The Orchard and Biostar, during separate events, attested to the benefits of the solar projects, which began operations in early 2022.

Spectrum’s partnership with The Orchard involves solar panels with combined capacity of 99.9-kilowatt-peak (kWp) installed at its sports and leisure facility in Dasmariñas, Cavite.

Completed in January 2022, the solar rooftop has since generated more than 125,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy, allowing the company to save 10,000 kwh in monthly consumption or a total of P785,000 a year.

Also, The Orchard’s carbon footprint was reduced by around 89 tons, which is equivalent to planting 4,100 trees or reducing approximately 355,000 kms in vehicle travel a year.

Spectrum’s project with Biostar, a licensed distributor and manufacturer of animal health products in the country, involves a 24.96-kWp rooftop facility at the latter’s poultry farm in San Pablo City, Laguna.

Energized in April 2022, the facility has so far generated some 21,520 kWh of clean energy, which translated into  savings of close to P167,000.

Biostar also achieved 15.33 tons reduction in carbon footprint, which is equivalent to planting more than 700 trees or lowering vehicle travel per year by 61,054 kms.
