Here’s how Maynilad is addressing the growing demand for clean water

Water is a resource we often take for granted. When we turn on our faucets, we expect clean water to flow. It has become indispensable as we use it for almost all daily activities, from bathing, cleaning, drinking, and cooking.

The demand for reliable potable water in Metro Manila has increased considerably over the years. This is due to a number of factors, among them urban migration and intensified economic activities. Cities have become more densely populated, with the construction of high-rise buildings and condominiums creating an unprecedented demand for water that now stretches the limits of the existing water infrastructure.

Meanwhile, climate change has begun to affect existing raw water sources. Changes in rainfall patterns have led to longer droughts and more severe typhoons, which ultimately affect the availability of water supply.

Today, the main raw water source of Metro Manila and nearby provinces is the Angat Dam. This over-reliance on just one primary supply source has caused great strain on the water servicing industry and, unfortunately, has led to more service interruptions.

Committed to its mission of providing sustainable water solutions so that Filipino families may lead healthier and more comfortable lives, Maynilad is addressing the above challenges head-on. From 2023 to 2027, the company will be investing heavily on infrastructure projects as part of its service enhancement program.

Over the next five years, Maynilad is targeting to spend around ₱220 billion for the installation of new pipelines; construction of additional treatment plants, pumping stations and reservoirs; and replacement and repair of worn-out pipes.

Beyond this, Maynilad is also focusing on its wastewater projects, which include the construction of new sewage treatment plants. According to the World Bank, efficiently investing in wastewater and other sanitation infrastructure is crucial to achieve public health benefits, improve the environment, and enhance quality of life. And this is why Maynilad has laid out a wastewater investment plan from 2023 to 2046 that involves the construction of 18 new Sewage Treatment Plants, installation of 360 kilometers of new sewer lines, and upgrade of its existing wastewater facilities to meet the stricter effluent standards of the government. The company’s sewerage and sanitation projects promote environmental sustainability, as wastewater treatment helps to lessen pollution loading into water bodies.

And while customers may see a slight increase in their water bill over the next five years, when these projects are completed, Maynilad’s improved infrastructure will allow the company to provide more water supply and improved wastewater services to its customers. From the construction of new water treatment plants alone, more than 545 million liters per day (MLD) of additional water supply can be produced. Meanwhile, pipe replacement activities will help to reduce losses in the network, thus leading to supply recovery for distribution.

This would mean more water for more customers. An even greater number of households would have 24-hour water availability at a steady pressure of 7 pounds per square inch (PSI), thereby reducing service interruptions. So that every time you turn on your faucet or shower, there will be a hundred percent assurance that clean water will be available for to you.
