DHL to charge higher fees in 2023 to hedge vs inflation

Consumers using the parcel delivery services of logistics company DHL Express Philippines will pay more next year, as it adjusts its prices to blunt the impact of accelerating inflation and fund capital expenditures.

Its fees, which are adjusted on an annual basis, will increase by 7.9 percent effective Jan. 1, 2023.

“With the annual price adjustment, we are able to invest in our infrastructure and technology to ensure resilient, sustainable and world-class customer solutions,” said Nigel Lockett, country manager of DHL Express Philippines.

Among these are aircraft and vehicles, hubs and gateway expansion and green solutions such as use of sustainable aviation fuel.

Apart from inflation, price adjustments also consider currency dynamics and administrative costs related to regulatory and security measures.

The price changes also vary from country to country where DHL operates, depending on the local conditions.

Turbulent year

“So far, 2022 has been another turbulent year with a volatile market environment challenging global trade. However, we have proven our ability to offer stable and reliable services to our customers globally,” Lockett said in a statement.

In January, the logistics company announced the purchase of its first three electric vehicles (EV), which was in line with its goal of reducing carbon emissions. These were deployed in key cities in Metro Manila.

The EVs were manufactured by zero-emission vehicle manufacturer Build Your Dreams. The units can travel for up to 250 kilometers and handle up to 3.5 cubic meters of load.

“The purchase of these electric vehicles is our first step toward greener logistics, which will benefit the environment, our customers and our people,” Lockett said earlier.

Deutsche Post DHL Group, where DHL Express is a part of, aims to convert 60 percent of its global fleet into EV units by 2030. It targets to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The group, which is present in over 220 countries and territories, offers national and international parcel delivery, e-commerce shipping and road, air and ocean transport. INQ
