E for Exuberance and Efficiency
For high-performance cars, the words power and efficiency do not usually come in one sentence.
With the new Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG these two words become the car’s duality. With Mercedes-Benz’s “AMG Performance 2015” model strategy, the E 63 is one of the cars to use the new AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine.
Already fitted in the current CLS 63 AMG, it has an output of 386 kW (525 hp) to 410 kW (557 hp), with an impressive increase in fuel efficiency, with about 22 percent than its predecessor engine, the AMG 6.3 liter V8 naturally aspirated engine. Available in both sedan and estate variants, the cars are equipped with AMG’s Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission and the newly developed electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering system. This allows the power steering pump to be powered with an intelligent motor instead of relying on the car’s pulley to power the steering pump.
The new biturbo V8 engine features a spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors and a full aluminum crankcase, an air and
water intercooler and a generator management plus a stop/start system. While the standard power output is about 525 hp, with the optional AMG Performance package bumps up the power rating to 557 hp. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h is 4.3 seconds and 4.2 seconds for the optional performance package for the sedan while the estate version is rated at 4.4 seconds and 4.3 seconds respectively, giving a top speed is 250 km/h with an electronic limiter.

While this writer has yet to test-drive the E 63, he has ridden the CLS 63 AMG, which has the same engine as the E 63, in a recent AMG Power Breakfast fun run hosted by CATS Motors, the country’s exclusive distributor for Mercedes-Benz. The car’s refined cabin belies the beastly nature of this high-performance sedan that would put a lot of purebred sports cars to shame. Its Speedshift transmission is always spot on and it is a wonder why they ever put the paddle shift there. Its intelligent circuitry shifts power whether it is on throttle or downshift in perfect timing. The E 63 would be a perfect choice between a weekday time-saving corporate commute and a weekend high-powered fun run track car when the situation calls for it.
