Shakey’s doubles Peri-Peri store network

Two years since acquiring Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken & Sauce Bar, restaurant chain operator Shakey’s Pizza Asia Ventures Inc. has doubled the brand’s store network, positioning the group to ride on the country’s postpandemic recovery.

Peri-Peri, now the second largest brand of Shakey’s, opened its 50th restaurant in Matalino, Quezon City, a thriving residential area and a well-known food hub located in the largest city in Metro Manila. This represents the 312th store in the entire store network of Shakey’s.

Shakey’s acquired Peri-Peri in June 2019, beginning with 23 stores in the metropolis.

“As we purposefully grow this brand, the focus is on building our store network and widening our reach to make the brand more accessible to its fast-growing market. This expansion is also timely due to the projected increase in demand once this crisis is over,” Shakey’s president and CEO Vicente Gregorio said on Monday in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, where the company trades under the ticker “PIZZA.”

Peri-Peri is known for charcoal-grilled chicken and its wide variety of specialty sauces that make use of the African bird’s eye chili called “piri-piri.”

“Even during this pandemic, the brand has demonstrated strong performance, and all the new stores have received very strong market acceptance. We attribute this to the distinct and very flavorful products we serve and the unique brand experience we provide,” Gregorio said.

Peri-Peri’s store formats are also designed to cater to off-premise dining, which is part and parcel of strategic pivots during the pandemic. Independent stores also offer park and order options for carryout.
