DICT activates free wifi sites in Mindanao military camps

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) activated 32 internet sites in several military camps of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Mindanao Command.

In a statement on Thursday (Aug. 19), the DICT said this was under its free wifi program and involved 16 locations.

The areas were Western Mindanao headquarters, Camp Navarro General Hospital, Edwin Andrews Air Base (headquarters, hospital, base operations and elementary school), Joint Task Force headquarters, Kuta Cesar L Sang –An Station Hospital, 44th Infantry Battalion, and 102nd Infantry Brigade all in Zamboanga.

Other wifi spots were 102nd Infantry Brigade in Marawi, 6th Infantry Division, Maguindanao, 68th Infantry Battalion, Basilan, JTFU Sulu Camp headquarters and Camp General Teodolfo Bautista Hospital in Jolo and the 12th MBLT Turtle Island, Tawi-Tawi.

“As a former soldier, we recognize the importance of connectivity in the operational readiness of soldiers, especially in our present situation,” said DICT Secretary Gregorio Honasan in a statement. “That is why the DICT continues to deploy free wifi sites in AFP military camps nationwide,” said Honasan, who was with the Navy before.

“This government-provisioned connectivity may also be used by our soldiers to communicate with their families and loves ones in other places in the country,” he added.

The DICT said a total of 10,527 free wifi sites were deployed as of Aug. 5 this year.
