The taxman as of end-May collected P995.04 million from errant firms, which have been temporarily shuttered and ordered to cough up their tax deficiencies, the Department of Finance (DOF) said on Monday.
In a statement, the DOF quoted Deputy Commissioner Arnel Guballa as saying that the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) closed down 207 establishments under its “Oplan Kandado” program from January to May.
Guballa recently reported to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III that in May alone, the BIR shut down 36 delinquent taxpayers.
The back taxes collected from the firms padlocked in May amounted to P37.3 million, Guballa said.
Also, the BIR filed 26 complaints for preliminary investigation before the Department of Justice involving P702.73 million in estimated tax liabilities on May, Guballa added.
The BIR haled into court alleged cheats under its Run After Tax Evaders program.
“In the Court of Appeals, the BIR filed another eight cases involving P1.04 billion in estimated tax deficiencies in May this year,” according to Guballa.
Last year, Oplan Kandado shuttered 209 tax-delinquent businesses, which allowed the BIR to collect P607.87 million in previously unpaid taxes.
