You’ve got your own corner at home and you’re all set to work with ease. That is, until a trio of pesky mosquitoes decided to keep you company and even have their snack courtesy of your legs. To make the day more interesting, you later feel your eyes go watery, your nose stuffy, and the next thing you know, you’re on a sneezing fit.
You need not feel defenseless—whether it’s mosquitoes or your troublesome allergens that threaten to disrupt your peace.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes can breed even in the smallest amount of water. Empty unused pots, glass bottles, containers and planters out of standing water. Turn these over as well to prevent water from collecting in them. Make sure that the covers of your water storage containers are shut tight to prevent mosquitoes from laying their eggs inside. Scatter your used coffee grounds and tea waste throughout your garden or yard. These are said to curb the reproduction of mosquitoes.
Arm yourself with insect repellent as well. There are a lot of conventional pesticides as well as plant-based products that can shield you from bites. Lemon eucalyptus oil, cinnamon oil, lavender, citronella, and tea tree oil are some of the more popular natural options that work against mosquitoes. If you’re a plant parent as well, you can grow pots of lavender, crush the flowers and apply the oil on areas of your body that are favorite mosquito targets.
Allergens
While the nippy breeze is a welcome delight during this time of year, cold season is also mold season. Since you are home most of the time, might as well invest in a good air purifier or dehumidifier that has a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Keep your living spaces dust- and dander-free by cleaning at least once a week with a vacuum cleaner that preferably has a HEPA filter. Pollen season is fast approaching, too, so better keep your trusted antihistamines on hand. Diffusing peppermint and frankincense essential oils in the air is said to be effective in fighting off allergic rhinitis.
