The Department of Agriculture (DA) has revised anew its set of suggested retail prices (SRPs) for basic agricultural commodities less than a week since it since it imposed them.
In a statement on Friday, the agency said the price adjustments were in response to the changing cost structures in the supply chain, adding that higher food prices have been observed because of logistical constraints and the adverse effect of the recent typhoons.
There have been increases in SRPs of selected commodities especially in vegetables, which the DA said was imposed to “allow retailers to realize a reasonable profit while ensuring that consumers are protected from profiteering.”
For instance, a kilo of ampalaya and sitao were now priced at P120 and P100, respectively, from their previous SRPs of P80.
Other commodities such as beef rump and beef brisket would still have the same SRP at P380 and P300 a kilo, respectively.
The updated SRP remains in effect for two months or until a new circular is issued by the agency.
The latest price scheme will exclude supermarkets anew and be applied in public markets in Metro Manila only. Commodities covered are rice, livestock and poultry, fish, lowland and highland vegetables, spices and other basic food items.
