Bringing the hotel flair to one’s home

An architect by profession, Vernon John Florendo lets his personal and professional experiences shape his designed spaces.

Nowadays, many of us are preoccupied with redecorating our spaces at home, especially our bedrooms. Numerous images in social media inspire us to develop a sense of style and translate them into DIY projects.

There are times, however, when the most impressive spaces are shaped by personal and professional experiences.

Such is the case with Vernon John Florendo, an architect who decided to renovate his family’s 40-year-old house in Cavite. Employed by one of the largest real estate developers in the country, Vernon was frequently exposed to luxurious spaces and high-end projects. His frequent travels and technical training also helped him develop an eye for good design over the years. These influences are clearly seen in his personal project of upgrading his family’s home.

For instance, Vernon’s bedroom was transformed from a simple sleeping area into a hotel-like unit with just a few changes. A combination of sheer and heavy drapes framed the existing window, providing a sense of elegance and privacy. The bed was fitted with a thick new comforter that seemingly made the cushions more inviting. Lastly, orchid plants were placed behind the bed headboard which, when coupled with the existing warmly-lit lamps, gave the whole space a tranquil setting.

Vernon’s bedroom was transformed into a hotel-like setting with a few key changes.

The luxurious theme continued on to the dining area, with candles, flowers and champagne glasses setting a calming, if not romantic, mood. Warm lighting set the area softly aglow, complemented by candlelight spread across the room. Drapes continued to suggest exclusivity, fitting for a home that sheltered a close-knit family. Empty wine bottles were filled with colorful string lights to give the kitchen counter a cozy, inviting feel.

Overall, these changes were simple yet exuded a sophisticated ambiance that could only come from years of personal exposure to luxury design. Without a word, these elements reveal Vernon’s experience at work, which includes a stint in a five-star hotel construction.

This new home design reveals not only its designer’s personality, but also his values and ideals. If you want to upgrade your home with just a few changes, Vernon recommends bringing out your artistic and creative side. Just look for something that can be recycled or reused and make it fabulous.

If you want to create a thing of personal and timeless beauty, however, don’t hesitate to ask a professional designer for help. While the internet is filled with many inspirational images and information, nothing beats exemplary taste honed by years of professional experience, education and actual exposure.
