A snappy salute to the Filipino SMEs

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which comprise 99.6% of all registered businesses in the Philippines, employ 70% of the country’s workforce. However, the imposition of stringent, months-long community quarantine measures in most major cities due to the COVID-19 pandemic has had a massive, if not crippling, effect on the economy. 

In April, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported staggering figures: 7.3 million and 6.4 million Filipinos have been rendered unemployed and underemployed, respectively, by the coronavirus crisis. And although basically all businesses are adversely impacted on, it is the more fragile SMEs that have taken the brunt of the economic havoc that COVID continues to wreak.

There are those, however, that refuse to throw in the towel despite the insurmountable challenges and the uphill struggle for survival. Fueled by various reasons — the business’ sentimental value, the well of optimism that just wouldn’t run dry, or the noble desire to protect its employees — these SMEs have become the real-life heroes of our floundering economy.
