Mold covers bags, shoes in department store after 2 months of coronavirus lockdown

A department store in Malaysia, which has been closed since March, has replaced items on display after they were found to have mold.

Photos of bags and shoes covered in mold circulated on Sunday, May 10, after Facebook user Nex Nezeum posted them.

“Goods all damaged after being left in shop for 2 [months],” he said. Wallets, belts and a seat for putting on shoes were also among the objects infested with mold.

Though the Facebook user did not mention the store, department store Metrojaya issued a statement yesterday, May 11, saying that its store in Suria Sabah shopping mall was pictured in a social media post.

It said that the pictures were taken for “internal use” and that the store has been closed since March 18. It noted that an investigation was underway to find out how the goods “came to be in that condition.”

“All damaged goods have now been removed from our shelves and replaced with new stocks,” it assured customers.

It also posted videos of its stores being disinfected prior to opening again to the public.
