American fast food chain KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) will pause from using its tagline “finger lickin’ good” while the novel coronavirus is spreading throughout the globe.

A spokesperson of the food company said that it did not feel like “the right time” to use the campaign, The Independent reported last Saturday, March 14.

“It doesn’t feel like the right time to be airing this campaign, so we’ve decided to pause it for now – but we’re really proud of it and look forward to bringing it back at a later date,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

In the United Kingdom, a television campaign made by the fast food chain, aired in late February, was reported by viewers. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) confirmed receiving 163 complaints related to the fast food chain’s campaign, according to the report. The ad apparently featured a variety of people sucking their fingers after eating chicken.

When ASA was about to contact the company in relation to the complaints, KFC has already suspended the campaign, thus no formal ruling was made anymore.

As a preventive measure against the virus, the World Health Organization advises the public to use alcohol or hand sanitizer to kill the virus. Washing one’s hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds also reduces the chances of getting infected by COVID-19.

Touching one’s eyes, nose and mouth should also be avoided because the virus can enter the body through these body parts. Cha Lino/JB
