Chicken and pork were the top livestock and poultry products consumed in the country, according to the latest Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Report titled, “Consumption of Selected Agricultural Commodities in the Philippines.”

A Filipino consumed about 9.3 kilograms of chicken and 8.9 kg of pork from 2015 to 2016, according to the 2017 report, the latest by the PSA on this matter.

About 1 kg of beef and less than 1 kg of “carabeef,” goat and duck were consumed during the same period.

Among the regions, Cagayan Valley was the biggest consumer of pork, with an estimated annual per capita consumption at 14 kg. Metro Manila followed with 13.6 kg.

The now-defunct Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao had the least pork consumption at 0.46 kg per person per year.

Metro Manila had the biggest chicken consumption at 14.5 kg per person per year, while Zamboanga Peninsula consumed only 5.1 kg per person per year, the lowest among all regions.

In 2018, livestock production was at 2.8 million metric tons, according to a separate PSA report. Of the number, 2.3 million MT were hogs, 263,000 MT were cattle and 143,000 MT were carabaos.

About 54 percent of the total hogs produced were from Luzon, while 26 percent were from Mindanao, and the remaining 20 percent were from Visayas.

Poultry production in 2018 was at 1.9 million MT. Of the number, 1.8 million MT were chicken, and the remaining 30,800 MT were ducks.

Some 65 percent of the total chicken produced were from Luzon, while 20 percent were from Mindanao and 15 percent were from Visayas. —COMPILED BY INQUIRER RESEARCH
