Veteran banker Nestor Tan, who led BDO Unibank’s transformation from a niche player to the country’s biggest and most valuable bank, was chosen by the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) as 2019 “Management Man of the Year.” The prestigious award is bestowed on individuals in the business community or government who distinguish themselves in the practice of management and contribute to progress. In a press statement on Tuesday, Oct. 22, MAP said Tan was chosen “for steering BDO to being consistently ranked by the global financial community as among the best-managed banks in the Philippines” as well as “transforming BDO into a full-service universal bank.” Tan was also cited for his “leadership role in the substantial contributions of the BDO Group to national development through job creation and income generation.” He was also credited for long-term financial literacy development, applying his international experience to the local banking industry, giving Filipinos efficient banking and financial services and setting an example for Filipino professional managers./TSB
