Snacking company Mondelez Philippines was recently recognized by the Sustainable Business Awards for their efforts to protect natural resources and reduce waste. The Sustainable Business Awards recognizes companies for their outstanding performance on environmental and social sustainability, highlighting their successes, and providing others with examples of best practices.
The four awards were for Best Water Management, Best Waste and Material Productivity, Best Business Responsibility and Ethics, and Special Recognition for Climate Change.
Under Water Management, the Company employs among others a Rainwater Harvesting system, used for cooling purposes and environmental cleaning. In fact, 98% of the water used in its Plant in Sucat, Paranaque is recovered for washing and domestic use. For Best Business Responsibility and Ethics, the Company was recognized for its strict compliance standards and regular audits conducted by 3rd parties. Under Climate Change, the Company uses 100% renewable energy through geothermal power and by using a Biomass Boiler. The latter uses biodegradable and renewable sources of heating like rice hull and coconut husks instead of traditional fuel sources.
For Waste and Material Productivity, the Plant has a “Zero Waste to Land fill” project and increased waste re-use. It has also recently built three play areas for its adopted Joy Schools using recycled plastic ecobricks, which was recognized by the award. These ecobricks are recycled plastic bottles filled with shredded plastic packaging, which were collected by employees of the Company as well as students and parents of the recipient schools. These three play areas were able to utilize some 990 kilos of recycled plastic packaging altogether.
Inside the Mondelez Philippines office, the Company is also helping influence behaviors by eliminating unnecessary use of plastics like having a “Bring your own bag” policy, eliminating the use of plastic spoons and forks during gatherings, and bringing of one’s own mugs and utensils.
