Free insurance for MMDA men: P10,000 for accidental death, P5,000 for murder, assault

Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic rule enforcers would soon get free non-life insurance coverage, according to the Insurance Commission (IC).

Insurance companies from the groups Philippine Insurers and Reinsurers Association and Philippine Insurance Clubs on Tuesday, Oct. 15, signed a memorandum of agreement with the MMDA to provide accidental death and disability insurance coverage to MMDA personnel serving as traffic rule enforcers.

The group insurance policy would be issued by Fortune Life General Insurance Corp Inc. and carry such benefits like P10,000 for accidental death, P5,000 for murder and assault, P1,000 in reimbursement for medical treatment for accidents, P1,000 in burial expense for accidental death and P10,000 for motorcycling coverage.

Premiums will be shouldered by the insurance industry, according to Insurance Commissioner Dennis B. Fung.

“We tend to forget to appreciate our MMDA personnel and enforcers for their efforts in managing our traffic system,” said Fung.

“We tend that in order for them to perform their duties, they need to go out there in the middle of the road which puts them at different risks such as getting caught in accidents or acquiring sickness from being exposed to pollution and changing weather,” he added.

“It is fitting for our MMDA enforcers” to be covered by insurance, Fung said.

Free insurance, he added, was also a big help to MMDA enforcers who earn just P537 per day or P11,800 per month which makes insurance the least of their priorities.

The quid pro quo, according to Fung, was the MMDA’s help to support the insurance industry in its campaign for disaster preparedness and risk awareness./TSB
