Uniqlo has opened its doors in India for the first time.

The Japanese fashion brand has set up shop in New Delhi, marking its official entry into the Indian market. It has also announced the opening of two further new locations in New Delhi NCR planned for a later date.

Located in the Ambience Mall Vasant Kunj, the brand’s newest store clocks in at 35,000 square feet and features a three-story high bay window façade. Inside, the decor takes inspiration from both the Japanese and Indian aesthetics, featuring natural materials, a high-energy LED ticker screen, and a large mural by the illustrator Dattaraj M. Naik that spans three walls and captures “the essence of daily life.” The space also includes an installation by the local artist Johnson Kshetrimayum that incorporates Uniqlo lambswool.

Tadashi Yanai, Uniqlo founder and chairman, and president/CEO of the brand’s parent company Fast Retailing Group, said the company had wanted to open stores in India for some time.

“In the years ahead, we aim to enhance lifestyles in India by offering more innovative apparel that draws on the nation’s distinct culture and traditions,” he said. “We wish to contribute to India’s economic development in the process.”

Uniqlo also chose its Indian launch to debut its new LifeWear concept, comprising clothes that focus on the Japanese values of simplicity, high-quality and longevity. The collection is showcased on the ground floor of the new boutique.

The brand has also teamed up with the Delhi-based designer Rina Singh on its first India collaboration dubbed The Kurta Collection, which is stocked in-store alongside collaboration lines by Ines de la Fressange and Hana Tajima. JB
