Swedish BPO opens 5th site in PH

Swedish-owned BPO (business process outsourcing) company Transcom opened its latest site in Metro Manila on Tuesday, but its future beyond this is uncertain amid a ban on new economic zones in the country’s capital.

Transcom opened its site at The 30th Corporate Center in Pasig City, occupying two floors and marking its fifth site in the country. Three of its offices are now in Metro Manila while two others are in Visayas.

The newest location is expected to eventually hire up to 1,000 workers, bringing Transcom’s total workforce to 11,500.

But where to go next is still up in the air for the company after Malacañang slapped a surprise and indefinite ban on new ecozones in Metro Manila since June.

“We have a strategic approach to where our sites need to be. And that’s very much led by a number of factors, not least of which are our clients,” said Mark Lyndsell, Transcom’s CEO for the Global English Region.

He told reporters that the newest site was registered under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. —ROY STEPHEN C. CANIVEL
