‘Green chemistry’ wins US deal for Kalipay Coconut Farm
Utah-based personal care firm Young Living Essential Oils LC has picked as supplier Kalipay Coconut Farm on Polillo Island, thanks to the latter’s use of “green chemistry” and adherence to social responsibility.
“Young Living made a choice a long time ago to do what many organizations won’t—put purpose over profits,” Young Living chief supply chain officer Lauren Walker said in a statement.
“There are many ways we could have sourced the coconut oil we need for our products, ways that would have been much simpler or cheaper,” Walker said. “The Kalipay Coconut Farm stood out as a sustainable source of coconuts. We chose the Kalipay Coconut Farm because they shared our values of community and sustainability.”
The company noted that Kalipay Coconut Farm donated each year to the Lao Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helped empower less fortunate people in the Philippines through education, livelihood training, and values formation.
Also, Kalipay sponsors the children of local coconut farmers—so far a total of 84 students—to receive training in electromechanical technology, “helping to break the cycle of poverty and empower a new generation.”
Further, Young Living said that the Kalipay farm used green chemistry, a new discipline that optimized the use of resources and minimized waste.
The company said every Young Living product that used coconut oil sourced from the Kalipay Coconut Farm helped send children to school and protected the environment.
“Young Living will continue to partner with more farms like Kalipay that give back to local communities and implement sustainable practices,” it added.
Kalipay is the second Philippine farm to be included in Young Living’s roster of suppliers.
The other is Happy Pili Tree Farm in Camarines Sur, which is Young Living’s supplier of elemi essential oil that is produced when resin from the Pili tree is distilled.
