Summer fix

Get your roof repair paraphernalia from Wilcon Depot.

’Tis the season for beach trips, out of town breaks with the family and pool parties with friends. But ask every homeowner and they will all say that the summer season is also the best time to have roof repairs done before the onset of rains.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Those small holes or tiny cracks on your roof may not pose a problem now but why wait until these bring you major inconveniences in the future? Besides, your home is one of your biggest investments, it is only fitting that you see that it is in tiptop condition.

Fill in those small holes with sealant. Be aware, however, that there are some sealants which eventually tend to crack after some time of being exposed to weather changes.

Use a spreader when applying sealants. Metal spreaders are sturdier but plastic ones are safer to use especially if you are a newbie handyman. If you will use a metal spreader, make sure to wear gloves prevent injuries.

Elastomeric paint is probably one of the most efficient ways to seal those cracks and holes on your roof. It is applied the same way as you would the usual paint, by using a brush, a roller or a sprayer. Elastomeric paint, however, has a thicker consistency and, if applied well, is guaranteed to be a lasting solution. It also comes in various colors so you do not have to worry about your roof’s look.

To patch up bigger holes or cracks, you can use a waterproofing cloth together with elastomeric waterproofing paint. First, apply a coat of elastomeric paint over the hole. Second, put a patch of waterproofing cloth over the painted spot. And third, apply another coat of paint over the patch so it would look like you’re sandwiching the patch between two coats of paint.

Summer is also the best time if you want to give your roof a fresh coat of paint. Choosing a color is very much like picking what color to wear especially when the temperatures are expected to go through the roof. Go for light colors such as beige, light yellow or light blue because it does not absorb much heat.
