Every dark cloud has a silver lining.

If there is one positive thing that typhoons bring to homeowners, it is the chance to check on the condition of the house and conduct a much needed cleanup.

Now is the time to check for leaks in the roof, unhinged windows, damaged gutters and obstructed drainage. And having the right implements and products can go a long way in cleaning up and doing repairs on your house.

FEATURED STORIES

Rubber gloves and boots

You will be sorting through a mishmash of furniture and items which have been soiled by floodwater. Just because cleaning up is your priority, it doesn’t mean that you should forget about safety.

A pair of heavy work gloves and sturdy rubber boots will be your best protection from unnecessary cuts and bruises, especially if you are also going through piles of debris. Consider using a facemask or an N95 respirator to decrease the risk of breathing in small particles in the air caused by sweeping and mold removal.

Disinfectant

One can just imagine what disease-causing germs are in that floodwater. Give your garage, floors and walls a good hosing down immediately after the floods have subsided. Use a reliable detergent followed by a disinfectant such as Lysol.

Floor wax and paint

After you’ve dried your floors, apply a coat of floor wax on it to avoid further damage. Give the damaged parts of your house, especially those that are most likely to develop rust, a fresh coat of paint.

Sealant

Seal, patch and fill leaks, cracks, holes and gaps with an all-around elastomeric sealant such as Super Vulcaseal. It is easy to use and can be used in corrugated metal roofing, gutters, downspouts and plumbing pipes. Another sealant is Primero Elastomeric Sealants, a water-based premium sealant with outstanding flexibility and adhesion. It can readily be used on wood, cement, and hardiflex plastics. It does not crack or melt and can also withstand extreme UV rays of the sun.
