Viu now a Global and regional streaming giant
Viu has reached leader status in the video streaming business, sharing the stage with Amazon, YouTube, Netflix and Hotstar, as revealed in the recently concluded APOS 2018 in Bali, Indonesia.
APOS is Asia’s premier event for the media, telecoms and entertainment industry. It hosts the biggest local, regional and global brands in consumer media and telecoms distribution ecosystems, entertainment, sports and games.
Viu, operated by PCCW, is the largest quad-play telco and pay-TV operator in Hong Kong. It is available in over 15 markets worldwide including Singapore, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.
In the Philippines, Viu was launched in November 2016 and is operated by Megamobile of the Inquirer Group of Companies. It now has 1.6 million active monthly users.
Country head Arianne Kader-Cu expects more consumers to move to the platform, as Viu’s library of premium Asian content continues to grow.
“Viu has a huge market here in the Philippines. Filipinos are ‘kilig’ over our Korean content. They can enjoy it free, anytime, anywhere,” Kader-Cu said.
Kader-Cu also notes a significant shift of viewers using pirate sites towards the Viu app and website. She explained, “Our consumers prefer watching on Viu because our platform is legal, so they can enjoy their favorite programs without any pop-up ads or the risk of malware. Plus, content is made available same day as airing in Korea, like the newly-launched ‘Suits’.”
“Suits”, a Korean adaptation of the “Suits” series by NBC Universal based on characters created by Aaron Korsh, is among the new titles available on Viu Premium this month. JB
