A serendipitous Christmas holiday

One of the Christmas holidays I would never forget would be that time I spent it in New York City. There was so much to see and so much to do in this city, even more so at Christmas time.

You have those opulent and ultra festive window displays at the luxury department stores like Bendel’s and Bergdorf’s; the sparkling Harry Winston and Cartier buildings; and the always bright Times Square.

So this year, I have decided to bring the Christmas in New York City at home. Here’s how.

Jolly tablescape

For Filipinos, we know that the dining table is where the true holiday action happens, where we share stories, and give in to our cravings for that traditional juicy holiday ham and kesong puti.

Create a jolly tablescape by layering. A play in height with candlesticks at the center, spread across a sparkling table runner and bring out the shiny china.

To bring in a more authentic “white Christmas feel” from New York, you may want to hang oversized snowflakes above the tablescape.

Festive displays

Secondly, we millennials are known to do the unexpected and be resourceful.

Aside from the usual pearls, glitters and sequins—like the window displays in Bergdorf’s—why not surprise your guests by adding feathers and tassels as part of the decor? These can be used to line the mirrors or entry ways at home.

Mix in nature

One of my favorite memories during my New York holiday was walking along Central Park; watching the kids build snowmen and girlfriends ice skating; and seeing the leaves fall to the ground. This endearing memory brings me to my last thought: mix in nature.

You can have faux garlands combined with real greenery, tied together with silver or red thick ribbons. Then, wrap these around the bannisters of the stairs to make every grand entrance extra special.

Millennial or not, Christmas is Christmas—the merriest time of the year. Make it your own and share it with the ones you love. Always remember to make every Christmas a Christmas that will bring back great moments and create new memories to last a lifetime.
