Telco giant PLDT Inc. has expanded its domestic fiber optic network (DFON) in Mindanao, which it noted would help provide more reliable internet connectivity.

The P1-billion project, spanning 300 kilometers, would add resiliency to PLDT’s transmission backbone for home and business customers in Mindanao.

The fiber infrastructure runs through Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur, according to PLDT.

“Our sustained network investments are part of our commitment to deliver the best quality services, particularly internet connectivity, all over the country,” PLDT chair and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said in a statement.

“With the completion of this project, customers using our fixed and mobile phone networks in Mindanao will experience even more superior voice, data and multimedia services,” he added.

PLDT said the fiber optic cables were installed underground, thus they were less vulnerable to damage caused by strong winds, falling trees and utility poles.

“The added resiliency complements the boosted capacity in the DFON facilities in the area which has over 300 gigabits per second already installed in the local loop and is targeted to raise the capacity to 400 Gbps by end of the year,” PLDT said.
