Telco giant PLDT Inc. said its fiber service now covers all major areas of Cavite province, in step with the group’s broader strategy to deliver better fixed-internet services as competition in this space grows.
In a statement over the weekend, PLDT branded Cavite as the country’s first “Fibr-powered Smart province.”
“PLDT Home Fibr now covers all 23 cities and municipalities of Cavite,” Oscar Reyes Jr., PLDT first vice president and head of consumer business for market development, said.
“As the country’s first-ever Fibr-powered Smart province, Cavite’s residents and businesses now have access to PLDT’s robust, reliable internet and leading digital services to strengthen their connections at home and at work,” he added.
The province-wide FTTH deployment in Cavite is the latest phase in PLDT’s “aggressive fiber expansion program.” The initiative is ongoing in other urbanized areas across the country, including Metro Manila, Cebu, Naga and General Santos.
At the end of June this year, PLDT’s fiber facilities have already reached around 3.3 million homes. PLDT expects to expand its FTTH coverage to reach about 4 million homes by the end of 2017.
It was also deploying hybrid fiber technologies, including Huawei’s G.fast, which could boost data speeds up to 600 to 700 megabits per second over copper lines.
PLDT’s capital spending this year would hit around P38 billion, less than originally planned, the telco had said early this month. —MIGUEL R. CAMUS
