The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System has launched the One Million Tree Challenge for Watersheds.
This campaign aims to plant, maintain and nurture at least one million trees annually for five years under the current administration with the end view of protecting the watersheds and ensuring sustainable supply of drinking water to 12 million Metro Manila residents.
Six watersheds have been identified as beneficiaries of this campaign. These are Umiray, Angat, Ipo, Marikina, Laguna Lake and La Mesa watersheds.
ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya’s environmental arm, Bantay Kalikasan, took on the rehabilitation of the La Mesa Watershed in 1999, in partnership with MWSS and the two concessionaires: Maynilad and Manila Water.
Bantay Kalikasan committed to plant at least 140,000 trees every year.
The One Million Trees Campaign is part of the celebration of MWSS’ 140th anniversary in February 2018 and Bantay Kalikasan’s 20th anniversary in July 2018.
