Yes, 3D Printing is well and alive in the Philippines, especially in healthcare and medicine.
The 2nd Philippine 3D Printing and Digifab Expo and Conference to be held on Feb 8 and 9 at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria in Ortigas Center, 11am to 5pm, features two important talks that brings to fore how 3D Printing is presently poised to advance medicine in the country.
These two much-awaited talks feature Dr. Rafael Bundoc, Professor, Section of Spine Surgery, Department of Orthopedics at the University o the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) with his talk “3D Printing Poised to Leapfrog Barriers in Medicine: Present and Future Applications” and Prof. Jopeth M. Ramis, M.Sc., Graduate School Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, Technological Institute of the Philippines to give a talk on “Biomedical 3D Printing: The Future of Medicine.”
According to Dr Bundoc, “The advent of additive manufacturing or 3D printing is now pushing the field of medicine further by leaps and bounds.
In just a little over a decade since it was introduced to medical application, 3D printing is already dramatically transforming the delivery of healthcare. Initially it was only utilized to produce detailed 3D printed bio-models to help us understand how diseases have affected body parts. Now it has paved the way towards more accurate surgical procedures by providing patient specific surgical templates. 3D Printing promises to produce complex biomedical devices using patient-specific anatomical data to create patient-tailored devices, implants, diagnostic platforms, and even drug delivery systems. Currently, there is a concerted effort in combining stem cells with custom 3D printed scaffolds for personalized regenerative medicine to treat tissues damaged by trauma, infections, cancer, and ageing. The fabrication of some artificial body parts is very much in the horizon already. The introduction of new biocompatible and biodegradable materials in the field of 3D printing is pushing the bounds further. It is steadily providing solutions to many more medical and surgical problems that afflict us.”
His lecture will give a visual narrative to appreciate how 3D printing has broken barriers in medicine and how it is transforming health care nowadays and in the near future.
Professor Ramis’ meanwhile will give a talk on bioprinting as compared to the traditional 3D printing, as it has complexities because of the inclusion of live materials for fabrication of functional tissues and organs. In this talk, he will discuss the techniques and methodologies of 3D bioprinting, its worldwide current trend, and the commercial potential of such technology. It is expected that the maturity of the technology in this era of regenerative medicine can solve previously unsolvable medical barriers in transplantation, opening opportunities to millions of individuals that formerly has no option for remedy.
