Be an angel this Christmas

The great British statesman Winston Churchill once said, “Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.”

Indeed, this holiday season should serve as a perfect time to look back on the year that is about to end and relive the wonderful moments and accomplishments and think about how to improve things that did not end the way we planned.

As people managers and HR practitioners, we should be an angel this Christmas to our respective organizations. It’s not that I am saying that we have not done nice things for our companies but what I want to imply is that we have the opportunity to be angels to employees. I can think of at least four ways on how to be one.

First, you can be like St. Gabriel who will announce the good news. During your year-end programs, you can recognize outstanding employees, present innovations and improvements for next year, bonuses and employee rewards, or simply assuring that the company has full trust with the way its people are performing their duties and responsibilities.

Second, you can sing literally like the angels. Share your talent and perform with your team. If for so many years you are the one in charge of the program of Christmas parties, this time you should be the one on stage leading your co-workers to sing. Let me inspire you with one of my favorite holiday tune, “Hark! the herald angels sing. “Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled…”

Third, you should spread faith, hope and charity. Christmas is a time for sharing. Many companies conduct annual CSR projects during the holidays. Would it be nice if you practice helping other people in your own backyard. Do you have worker who has a sick loved one or children he or she can’t afford to send to school. Be an angel to the people in your organization who are also in need.

Fourth, be generous! If the year has brought you so many blessings whether financially or through many new opportunities that came your way, it would be a great gesture to give back to your community with whatever you are able and sincerely share.

The spirit of Christmas reminds me of Stephen Covey’s dimensions to renew your character. There are four areas where you can develop your character and wellbeing to achieve a better you

Physical dimension: Always take care of your body. Maintain a balance diet, get enough sleep and exercise every day. Don’t be just conscious about your health when you start to feel uncomfortable with body pain, easily get tired or gained weight. In other words, love yourself before it’s too late.

Spiritual dimension: Allot time to reflect about your values and goals. Are you doing something to reach for your goals? Are you in the right direction? Having a moment of inner peace to think about your values and goals by heart will help you motivate yourself to aim higher.

Mental dimension: Never get tired to learn and discover new things. Learning should not stop because you think you have already attained the goals you have set or you have finally fulfil a life-long dream. Find time to refresh your mind and be in the know of what’s happening in the world.

Social/Emotional dimension: Build great relationships. Learn to listen to others so others will also listen to you. By understanding the needs of others, you will be able to create a community where teamwork will prosper and win-win results among every member.

Wishing everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
