Insurance product covers Pinoys’ most critical illnesses

Life insurer Sun Life of Canada (Philippines) Inc. has rolled out new protection products seeking to help Filipinos cope with unexpected financial burden in case of illnesses.

The first product, SUN Healthier Life, covers five of the top critical illnesses in the country: Cancer, lung disease, acute heart attack, kidney disease and stroke.

The offer comes with an easy application process as clients no longer need to undergo a medical examination, provided he or she is able to answer the health questions favorably, Sun Life said in a press statement.

Sun Healthier Life also offers coverage for minor or early stage critical illnesses and angioplasty to help clients secure the medical treatment they immediately need and focus more on their recovery.

From diagnosis to treatment to rehabilitation, it is estimated that a person who suffered from an acute heart attack may have to shell out at least P978,650. One who suffers a stroke is estimated to spend anywhere between P1.8 million and P2.7 million while the cost to battle lung cancer is estimated at P1.8 to P2.6 million.

For major critical illnesses, the insured person will receive 100 percent of the face amount while for minor illnesses, 30 percent of the face amount will be given.

The second health product is called SUN Fit and Well, described as a new generation wellness product that covers more than 100 critical illnesses. This is seen to offer the most comprehensive life and health protection, from prevention to rehabilitation.

“It was designed to help a client care for his health through wellness programs, and also have access to the best care should an illness strike. The product’s life stage protection feature will also enable one to address his evolving health protection needs from childhood all the way to the golden years,” the insurer said.

A special paid-up bonus is given at the end of the premium paying period alongside annual dividend earnings which may be withdrawn anytime or left with Sun Life to accumulate.

The product is also intended to supplement benefits meant to cover expenses related to medical treatment, hospitalization, follow-up specialist visits, home recovery and palliative care, subject to the specific guidelines set by Sun Life and the actual provisions of the insurance policy contract.
