Citi poaches JP Morgan’s digital banker

AMERICAN global banking giant Citi has hired a top digital banker from JP Morgan Chase as its new head of technology for global consumer banking.

The hiring of Gavin Michael, who had served as head of digital for consumer and community banking at JP Morgan, was cited as part of the bank’s plan to accelerate execution of its “mobile first” strategy, Citi global CEO for global consumer banking Stephen Bird announced.

Michael is set to join Citi starting Nov. 14 this year.

“Gavin brings a depth of international experience driving an enterprise-wide digital agenda and a unique blend of expertise across branch technology innovation, data analytics, product design, engineering and core and consumer technology.  In this role, he will lead the long-term strategic direction, planning and management of our global technology organization, execute our cloud architecture, data and services strategies and drive digitization efforts to accelerate speed to market,” Bird said in a memorandum dated Aug. 16.

Michael was recently named 2016 ‘Digital Banker of the Year’ by American Banker. At JP Morgan Chase, he was responsible for the technology and engineering teams as well as customer experience and design, product and payments, platform and delivery, data intelligence and data analytics.

Before joining Chase, Gavin was chief technology innovation officer at Accenture with responsibility for the innovation agenda, technology strategy, research and development and held senior technology roles at Lloyd’s Bank and IBM.
