The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has denied there was a breach of confidentiality amid the controversy surrounding the bank accounts of presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

“Our internal investigation reveals that there has been no such breach. BPI continues to have one of the most highly regarded data protection practices in the industry, and we are committed to protecting client information and preserving the trust bestowed on us by our clients all these years,” BPI said in statement on Friday.

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a vice presidential candidate, earlier said Duterte had at least P227 million—not P211 million as earlier reported—in his BPI account on Julia Vargas Avenue in Pasig City.

Trillanes said Duterte did not declare the P227 million in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).

The senator has dared Duterte to sign a waiver that would allow the opening of his bank accounts for public scrutiny.

Duterte called Trillanes’ allegations “fabricated,” saying he has less money in the said BPI account contrary to the senator’s claim.

The tough-talking mayor said Trillanes should execute an affidavit detailing how, when, where and for what purpose he obtained the bank information.

He said Trillanes has broken bank secrecy law with his claims.

Trillanes earlier dared Duterte to meet him on Monday at the Julia Vargas branch of BPI to sign a waiver allowing the opening of his bank account.

Duterte has accepted the challenge, saying he would allow the opening of the records through his lawyer Salvador Panelo.

The tough-talking mayor, however, said he won’t be able to make it to the BPI Julia Vargas Branch since he will be in Davao City on Monday.

He added that he expects Trillanes to be present there on Monday with his affidavit. IDL
