In his talk during the tech startup conference Slingshot MNL 2015, Richard Dasher, Ph.D. said that universities should be able to facilitate opportunities to link students to potential investors in order to turn their ideas into full-fledged businesses.
“Universities must nurture the youth’s passion in changing the world,” Dasher told an audience of about 1,000 people.
As a professor, Dasher emphasized the role of the university in developing students into future startup founders and entrepreneurs.
He said that universities should nurture a “real” worldview; focus on practical, real world problems; and facilitate multi-sector networking.
On zeroing in on real life applications, Dasher, who is also the US-Asia Technology Center chief, said that schools should instill values to students such as the courage to “translate willingness to manage own career” and turn passion to change the world to work ethic.
Meanwhile, to replicate the success story of Silicon Valley startups in the Philippines, Dasher said that local startup industry should “aim for home runs.”
“Develop a few superstar successful companies. Aim for home runs on a worldwide scale is [the] true essence of Silicon Valley. [It] requires commitment to grow a billion dollar company,” he said.
