Price of ‘Tasty’ coming down

Bakers are set to slash prices of Pinoy Tasty and Pinoy Pandesal effective July 14, even as the prices of locally milled flour have remained unchanged.

In a text message, Philippine Baking Industry Group (PhilBaking) president Nestor Constancia announced on Saturday that the group will reduce prices of Pinoy Tasty by 50 centavos per loaf to P36, and of Pinoy Pandesal by 25 centavos per 10-piece bag to P22.

“In our efforts to find ways to reduce the prices of Pinoy Tasty and Pandesal, we found a way by blending lower-priced imported flour with local flour,” Constancia said.

In a separate phone interview, Constancia explained that they had been testing various types of imported flour in order to bring down the prices of bread products. Since this did not turn out well, the group decided to blend cheaper imported flour from Vietnam, Turkey and Indonesia, among other places, with the more expensive locally milled flour.

Constancia appealed anew to local flour millers to bring down their prices amid declining global wheat prices. He said there was a small reduction of P10 per 25-kilogram bag, but this price adjustment will barely make a difference in the prices of bread products.
