It’s more fun for (cheap) beer drinkers in PH

Tourists may find beer drinking more fun in the Philippines with Manila ranking 15th among the cheapest destination for beers, according to the 2015 GoEuro Beer Price Index.

The index, which compared prices of beers in stores and bars in 75 cities worldwide, showed that the average price for a 33-centiliter (cl) beer in a Philippine supermarket stood at $0.61 (about P27 at current exchange rates), while the average price of beer sold in a bar reached to $3.94 (or about P177) per 33-cl bottle. These brought the overall average price of local and foreign beers sold here at $2.28 (P103) a bottle.

The index further showed that the Philippines had one of the lowest average annual per capita consumption of beers at only 27 liters, while the average annual spending per capita stood at $184 (approximately P8,280).

Prices converted to US dollars

The Beer Index was conducted by GoEuro.com, a Berlin-based travel search website for Europe that compares and combines air, rail, bus and car rental options. The price of a beer bottle was calculated as the average cost of a 33-cl bottle of several worldwide brands and a major local brand in a regular discount store.

GoEuro converted the prices in countries where beers are sold in 12 ounce bottles (35.5 cl) as against the European standard of 33cl. All prices were converted to US dollars using the Bloomberg exchange rate on June 12, 2015.

Results of the Beer Index further showed that the most costly destination for beers was Geneva, Switzerland, where the overall average price of beers stood at $6.32 per 33cl bottle, followed by Hong Kong ($6.16); Tel Aviv, Israel ($5.79); Oslo, Norway ($5.31); and New York, US ($5.20).

In contrast, cities that have the cheapest beers were Krakow, Poland ($1.66 per 33cl bottle); Kiev, Ukraine ($1.66); Bratislava, Slovakia ($1.69); Malaga, Spain ($1.72); and Delhi, India (1.75). To scale the difference, GoEuro said $10 in Krakow will get one just over six bottles of beer, but won’t buy two bottles in Geneva.
